Nonprofit Spotlight: The Burn Foundation of America

Our nonprofit spotlight for the month of June is The Burn Foundation of America.

The Burn Foundation of America provides assistance to families of burn patients being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. This includes lodging at the Chavis House, daily meals and transportation – all free of charge. In addition, the Burn Foundation assists patients upon their discharge with services related to their return to independent living. This includes medication, anti-scarring garments and transportation for follow up medical visits.

HISTORY

Joseph M. Still, Jr., M.D. dedicated his professional life to improvements in the treatment of burn patients. As founder of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, he teamed with the hospital in 1978 to build one of the world’s leading treatment facilities for burn patients. In 1988, Dr. Still founded the Burn Foundation of America (formerly Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation) to help burn patients and their families with non-medical necessities. Dr. Still’s dream was to provide a place for family members to stay while their loved ones were in the Burn Center.

The Shirley Badke Retreat, named for a courageous burn survivor, is home to our administrative offices, the Jeffery Vaden Chavis House and the Orlet Garden of Hope. The Chavis house, which sleeps forty guests, serves as a comfortable home-away-from-home where family members may stay near their loved ones as they recuperate from their burn injuries. Nearby, the Garden of Hope provides a place where our guests can get away from the hospital environment, pray, meditate or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the garden.Joseph M. Shirley Badke survived amazing odds after receiving burns over more than 85 percent of her body when a twin-engine airplane crashed into her workplace. In recognition of Shirley’s amazing story of survival, her incredibly positive attitude, and her family’s steadfast support throughout her recovery, the Shirley Badke Retreat was established adjacent to the campus of Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia in 1998. Shirley, still an active member of the local community, and her family continue to support the Burn Foundation of America.
