The Importance of Physical Cybersecurity

The Importance of Physical Cybersecurity

Criminals don’t just compromise your networks and data through cyber attacks. You should consider physical cybersecurity defenses as an additional safeguard to keep your data safe. Keep in mind, physical breaches can be carried out by criminals with very little knowledge.

Don’t just toss old equipment in the trash! Make sure you backup your files, wipe your hard drive, deauthorize computer programs such as iTunes and Microsoft, delete your browsing history, uninstall your programs, and consult your employer about data disposal policies.

Site Control Access: Lack of access control in an area where sensitive data is handled and stored can be devastating if the wrong person gains access. Just gaining access to a physical terminal where a USB can be plugged in can be all a criminal needs to launch an attack.

Accounting for Lost or Stolen Devices: When human error kicks in, do you have a contingency plan? Make sure you’re able to lock down and potentially wipe lost or stolen devices remotely.

Lock up Your Servers: Any area that your business stores crucial data needs to be secured. This includes fencing, locks, access control cards, etc.

Video Surveillance System: To ensure the area is secure, we highly recommend installing security cameras. Not only do they deter potential break ins, but you’ll be able to constantly monitor the area. In the worst case scenario that the area is broken into, you’ll have video to catch the perpetrator.

Secure Your Backups: Physical backups are incredibly important for your business continuity in the case of a disaster, including ransomware attacks. Treat them as you treat your servers and sensitive data, lock them up!

Make sure your physical cybersecurity system is deigned to be cyber secure.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

“Held every October, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and to ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online,” according to Homeland Security.

“NCSAM 2019 will emphasize personal accountability and stress the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace. This year’s overarching message – Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. – will focus on key areas including citizen privacy, consumer devices, and ecommerce security.” Learn more about National Cybersecurity Awareness Month here on the Homeland Security website.

Every weekday in October, we’ll help spread Cybersecurity awareness by sharing an important online safety tip.
